VOLUMINUM SCORE EXCERPT
VOLUMINUM
“A carnal bacchanal of sound. Five out of five stars”
VOLUMINUM (2023) is a 45 minute composition in homage to Hungarian Composer György Ligeti for concert hall organ, bass and electric guitars, harp and percussion. Inspired by both Ligeti and composer Sofia Gubiadulina, the work builds on these composers work with graphic notation, low frequency sound and noise.
Commissioned by the City of Melbourne, the work premiered in 2023 on the centenary of Ligeti’s birth, opening with a performance of Ligeti’s ground breaking organ solo, ‘Volumina’ (1966), presented for the first time in a scrolling notation format.
Voluminum explores the energy specific to the grand organ alongside more modern instruments. Developing from the strong influence of Ligeti and Gubaidulina’s work on Hope’s own, the work transforms Ligeti’s mass textural effects by adding amplified guitars, radical harp and large percussion including timpani and large gongs.
The work is performed in synchronisation with the scrolling animated score, and close up of the organist hands. It is soon to be released on LP via Melbourne’s Heavy Machinery Records.
