The house feels less of a surreal holiday house and more our home. A few things needed re-arranging, modifiying, sourcing... and there is still more to do. Luke has started school at Glenmore Road Public - the closest a public school has ever got to private in my experience. But the essentials are in place, and we've had time to explore a little bit of Sydney, the bizzare mixture of peoples and incomes that make up Paddington, and catch up with a few friends. In fact, getting the list together for a housewarming, i realise that over the years of travelling, different projects, touring and making artworks, i had got to know quite a few people in Sydney, and so far have had lovely meetings and fun times with people like Vanessa Tomlinson, Rakini Devi, Ollie Bown, Robbie Aveneim, Jack Sargent, Jim Denley, Gail Priest, John Davis, Austin Buckett, Julian Day, Jon Drummond, Shane Simpson, Tracey Moffat, Guy Fleming and more - mostly at the house. Even someone from Perth already - Johannes Leubbers and a few Skype visitors. We've even had guests stay over in our newly adapted visitors suite (!). The year planner is now on the wall. I am very keen on making my year in the house an open one. In fact, in the process of inviting past residents to the housewarming, i have got to meet and chat with even more people that i only knew of before now.
The time difference thing still throws me. I get hooked into chats with friends in Perth when i should be going to bed here. Contact with my European friends seems almost impossible as they are just waking up when i'm just about finished for the day. All that seems more manageable when travelling, strange when fixed in a new place.
And amongst the settling in, the fixing of dates for my Churchill and Civitavella travel, work has began. This has meant inspiring exchanges with Vanessa Tomlinson about the piece I am writing for her; playing with e-bows on the Stuart and Sons piano here for Zubin Kanga, chatting with Aaron Wyatt to see if my latest crazy 'fading score' idea will work, plotting the noise opera libretto with Jack Sargent; being inspired by listening to Georges Lentz (i love his work), listening and writing to Elaine Radigue, Ligeti string quartets AGAIN, New Weird Australia compilations, finding CDs in op-shops and the Paddington library at the end of the street (i bought hardly any music with me, strangely), finding connections with my own work in that of Yoko Ono's in her show at the MCA and its associated programs, Tess De Quincy's Inner Garden, reading Kathy Acker, whatever i can find about Peggy, a book on killing, Adlous Huxley's 'Music at Night' essays and a great book of Xenakis conversations with Balint Andras Varga. And smoking my pipe on the balcony sometimes, i'm sure Peggy did that. Starting to settle in.
